4 reasons why you need wax esters in your skincare routine
What is Jojoba?
Jojoba, commonly known as jojoba oil, is unlike any other oil - because it's not one! The liquid that comes from a Jojoba bean is actually liquid wax esters. Jojoba is the only plant to produce these wax esters, and therefore, the only known botanical source of replenishment.
While plant oils, like rosehip oil, argan oil and olive oil certainly have their place in a skincare routine and can be amazing for skin nourishment, wax esters are the lesser known hero.
Plant Oil | Jojoba |
---|---|
Made up of triglycerides | Made up of wax esters |
Can be comedogenic (clog pores) | Non-comedogenic |
Sits on the top layer of the skin to lock in moisture | Penetrates deeper into the skin as it has the same structure as the oils in our skin |
What is a Wax Ester?
Our Skin's Sebum | The Wax Esters in Our Skin |
---|---|
A wax ester is a type of ester that is formed from the reaction between a fatty acid and a fatty alcohol. | In the graphic above, you can see just how similar Jojoba's molecular structure is to that of human skin! |
The oils (sebum) in our skin are made up of roughly 30% wax esters, along with squalene and triglycerides.
Due to Jojoba being a wax ester, when applied to the skin it will recognises Jojoba as its own.
Jojoba's nature as a wax ester means it is able to penetrate the skin more deeply, helping to hydrate, soften skin and lock in moisture.
Jojoba also helps to rebalance the oil production in the skin making it great for those with oily or blemish prone skin.
Additionally those who deal with skin conditions like rosacea, psoriasis and ezcema will find that Jojoba helps to reduce appearance and symptoms.
Why are wax esters important for your skin?
Wax esters are super beneficial for the skin, which is why we've created an entire skincare range around our wax ester wonder: our Australian Jojoba.
Here are 4 reasons you should incorporate a wax ester like Jojoba into your skincare routine:
1. Wax Esters Are Compatible With Our Skin
Wax esters are highly compatible with the natural oils and lipids that are found in the skin, which means that they are easily absorbed and do not disrupt the skin's natural barrier function.
This makes them a good choice for people with sensitive skin or those who are prone to allergies or irritation.
2. Wax Esters Are Ultra Moisturising
Wax esters have a unique ability to hydrate the skin and help prevent moisture loss. This is because they form a protective barrier on the skin, which helps to lock in moisture and prevent dehydration.
This can be particularly beneficial for people with dry or sensitive skin, as it can help to soothe and nourish the skin.
3. Wax Esters Won't Clog Your Pores
Wax esters are non-comedogenic, which means that they do not clog pores or contribute to acne breakouts.
This is because they are similar in structure to the natural oils that are produced by the skin, and are easily absorbed without leaving a greasy residue.
4. Wax Esters Will Protect Your Skin
Wax esters can help to protect the skin from environmental stressors such as pollution, UV radiation, and harsh weather conditions.
This is because they form a protective barrier on the skin that helps to shield it from external damage.
